Updating Your 2025-2026 FAFSA After Marriage

Can I update my FAFSA if I get married?

Maybe! Updates are reviewed case by case.

To submit or correct your FAFSA after marriage and be considered for federal student aid, you must meet these criteria:

  • You submitted an initial FAFSA by June 30, 2026.

  • You are (or will be) married by June 30, 2026.

  • You are (or will be) enrolled in the 2025–2026 school year (Fall 2025–Summer 2026) at the time you make the update.

  • If you already filed a FAFSA, you’ll just correct the existing one—don’t start a new application.

Will updating help me get more aid?

Not always. Changing your marital status might increase your aid, but in some cases it won’t change anything—or could even lower your aid.

What should I do before making changes?

Talk to our office! We can help you figure out if updating your FAFSA will actually benefit you.

Updating your marital status on the FAFSA might not increase your Pell Grant. In fact, if you’re already getting a large Pell Grant, making this change could even reduce your aid.

Before making any corrections, we strongly recommend talking with our office so we can help you understand how this change could affect your aid.
