Scholarship Semester Credit Requirement Petition

BYU sometimes grants exceptions to the credit requirements for scholarships based on individual needs. The committee considers serious situations like illness, injury, disability, or family responsibilities (such as being a single parent). However, exceptions are not granted for reasons like marriage, a difficult course load, employment, or graduate school tests.

Petitions for fewer than 9 credits: Reviewed carefully and unfortunately not generally approved. Must show serious, documented circumstances like:
  • Title IX-related situations
  • Death of an immediate family member (parent/sibling/spouse)
  • Major medical conditions with doctor verification
Because scholarship petitions for fewer than 9 credits are rarely approved, consider submitting a Pro-Rated Tuition Petition (PDF) as an alternative. This may help reduce your tuition cost for the semester, even if your scholarship petition is denied.

To Submit a Petition:

  1. Write a personal statement.
  2. If your petition is due to medical reasons, please provide documentation.
